When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, "Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.
― Fred Rogers
Bobby was nervous to go to his new kindergarten. His mother said, “Think about something that makes you feel happy.” Bobby loved space. He decided to pretend he was an astronaut blasting off to space. That made him feel happy and brave.
The first activity at kindergarten was circle time. Bobby felt nervous having to sit with so many new kids. So, Bobby pretended that the other kids were other astronauts and asteroids he encountered in space. The nice seeming kids were the astronauts, and the kids who made mean faces at him were the asteroids!
Bobby’s spaceship was called 24016 Axiom. Oh no! Bobby saw an asteroid! It was coming straight at his spaceship. Luckily, Johnny, Bobby’s best friend from the neighborhood was in his class, too. So Astronaut Johnny was along with him in space, and Johnny had a helper robot who could fix anything! Johnny and the robot made sure that any parts of the spaceship that got damaged were rebuilt.
Back on Earth, in circle time, the teacher taught the class about the sounds that the different letters make when you try to sound them out. Suddenly, the asteroids shooting by his ship made the different letter sounds: ahhhhh, ehhhh, ihhh, ohhhhh, uhhhh!
Oh no, a few of the asteroids were about to hit Earth! It was up to Bobby to protect the planet. He would have to put his spaceship between the asteroid and Earth. Astronaut Johnny and his robot ejected and landed back home safely. Impact in 3, 2, 1. Explosion! Now Bobby was falling through the air, without his trusty spaceship!
Bobby sent out the alert to call his best alien friends to come to the rescue. They used their laser beams to break up the asteroids, and they used their special alien anti-gravity device to lower Bobby gently back to Earth.
Bobby’s alien friends had a party back home to celebrate the successful mission. An alien party!
Now at school, it was time for recess. Bobby told a few of his new classmates all about his adventures, and he made some new friends.
Then the kids talked about what they wanted to be when they grew up. “I want to be a fire fighter!” said one kid. “I want to be a police officer!” said another girl. “I want to be a teacher,” said another. “And I want to be a doctor,” said Johnny.
Bobby thought that all those jobs sounded great, plus of course, space astronaut planet defender! He didn’t want to have to choose. He decided that when he grew up, he would do all of those things. “I want to be a Helper Bobby when I grow up. Helper Bobby’s superpower is that he can learn any job, and he’s always there to help!”
And Helper Bobby decided that this school was not so scary after all!
